Properties: acrid, neutral
Channels Entered: Spleen, Stomach

Actions and Clinical Applications:
1. Aromatically Transforms Dampness

Dampness Obstructing the Middle Jiao syndrome

2. Releases Summerheat, and Eliminates Dampness
a) Initial stage of Damp wann-febrile disease
b) Exterior Damp-Summerheat syndrome

Dosageand Administration:
4.5-9g.

Pharmacological Actions:
a) Major Ingredients:

P-cymene, nerylacetate, thymohydroquinone

b) Actions:

• Antibiotic effect: the active components, p-cymene and nerylacetate have a direct inhibitory effect on viruses

Hou Po

Pha,-maceutical Name: Cortex Magnoliae Officinal is
Properties: bitter, acrid, warm, aromatic
Channels Ente,-ed: Large Intestine, Lung, Spleen, Stomach

Actions and Clinical Applications:
I. Activates Qi Circulation, Dries Dampness, Reduces Distention and fullness

Abdominal distention and fullness due to Qi or food Stagnation, and Dampness retention: fullness, and distention
sensation, pain over the epigastrium chest, and abdomen, vomiting, nausea,or diarrhea

2. Directs the Rebellious Lung Qi Downward, Expels Phlegm, Relieves Wheezing
Phlegm Obstruction in Lung: Coughing and Wheezing with copious sputum, stifling sensation in the chest

Dosage and Administration:
3-9g.

Pha"macological Actions:
a) Major Ingredients:

Magnolol, iso-magnolol, magnocurarine

b) Actions:
• Antimicrobial: broad-spectrum antibacterial
• Magnocurarine can relax striated muscles, Lowers blood pressure and accelerates heart rate
• Its decoction stimulates the stomach muscles, intestines and bronchi in rabbits in vitro
• Magnocurarine is slightly toxic, but has a very low concentration in the blood (very slowly absorbed by intestines

and immediately excreted by the kidneys)
• Mild anticoagulant effect

Notes:

I. Use cautionously during pregnancy
2. Hou Po Hua (flos magnoliae otIicinalis), flowering portion of the plant

Actions: Similar to Hou Po, but has a weaker action, focuses more on the Upper/Middle Jiao and regulates the
Liver Qi.

Applications: For fullness sensation of the chest and disharmony of the Liver and Stomach

Dosage: 3-6g.

Cnidium Seeds

She Chuang Zi

Pharmaceutical Name: Fructus Cnidii Monnieri
Properties: acrid, bitter, warm
Channels Entered: Kidney

Actions and Clinical Applications:
1. Warms the Kidney and Strengthens Yang

Kidney Yang Deficiency with impotence, infertility (male and female), sorenessofthe lower back and knees, enuresis,
frequent urination

2. Dispels Cold, Disperses Wind and Dries Dampness
a) Wind-Damp-Cold Bi (painful obstruction syndrome)
b) Vaginal discharge due to Wind-Damp-Cold

3. Dries Dampness, Kills parasites and Stops itching
a) Topically as a wash, powder, or ointment for skin lesions, pruritis vulvage, eczema of scrotum, tinea, scabies
b) As vaginal suppository for trichomonas vaginitis

Dosage and Administration:
3-9g.

Pharmacological Actions:
a) Major Ingredients:

L-pinene, I-camphene, bornul acetale, osthol, etc

b) Actions:
• Endocrine Effect: the alcohol extract has a gonadotropic effect; i.e., prolongs estrus, increases the weight of the

ovaries and uterus in female mice and that of prostate, seminal vesicle and ani muscle of levator in male mice
• Hematology Effect: relieves leukopenia in mice
• Anti-microbial Effect: inhibits the growth of trichomonad and many dematomycoses in vitro
• Anti-dysrhythmia: 50g/kg extract abdominal injection can prevent and treat dysrhythmia in mice
• Immune System Effect: the active ingredient osthol, 100~200mg!kg (oral administration) relieves asthma in mice,

and shows a strong inhibitory effect on P.c.A. (one of allergy reaction). Also 5, 10, 20, or 30ug osthol has an
inhibitory effect on Schultz-dalle (a reaction on rats)

• Respiratory System Effect: osthol has bronchial dilating effect and increases the flow. It significantly releases the
bronchial tract spasms
